Villa Eleftherna
is unique, as the owner Pantelis Nikoloudakis is a brickworker. Or rather an artist, namely a specialist for natural stone and wood. |
During a 5 years construction period he built with his own hands this remarkable house where outside no mortar can be found: All stones fit exactly to each other.
The building indeed is hold together by mortar, also to make the walls tight, but it is hidden in the walls.
Inside there are some plastered walls though, and the modern bathrooms have tiles. As somewhere you have to hide all the cables and pipes, says Pantelis. |

And he looks pensively on the satellite dish which in fact does not completely fit to the general image. |

Eleftherna
is a tiny village by the road from Margarites to Arkadi Monastery, some 24 kms east of Rethymnon on the north coast of Crete.
In the neighbourhood there are the village of Old Eleftherna and the excavation site of the ancient town of Eleftherna.
The surroundings on the north slope of the Ida massif are expressively peaceful. |
From time to time cars pass the village, mainly during the summer when holidaymakers go from Arkadi Monastery to the ruins and further on to Margarites. The road does however not suit for motorcoaches. |
